No Such Thing as a Bad Kid

Two-Day Train the Trainer Course: Understanding & Responding to Children and Youth with Emotional and Behavioral Issues by Creating and Maintaining a Positive, Strength-Based Culture in Your Setting

Workshop Description: Strength-based practice is an emerging approach to helping at-risk children, youth and their families that is exceptionally positive and inspiring. Its focus is on strength-building rather than flaw-fixing. It begins with the belief that every individual has strengths and past successes that can be utilized to stop problem behavior and enhance decision making.

This two-day comprehensive seminar will highlight many of the key principles and techniques of this transforming modality. Areas covered include: What is strength-based practice and the power of a positive attitude; strength-based communication principles and techniques - including reframing, the creative use of metaphors, and solution focused communication; self-esteem building & activities for at-risk children and youth; how to help inflexible and explosive young people; what every teacher or child welfare professional should know about developmental psychology; enhancing empathy for traumatized children and youth; the importance of being family centered; why, how, and when to use incentive plans; the importance of controlling personal emotions (i.e. how to manage number one first) & de-escalation strategies; being proactive - the art of preventing problem behavior; how to take humor seriously; respectful limit setting; and a host of creative cognitive behavioral strategies.

The second half of day two is devoted to presenting a host of strength-based orientation and training strategies that will help participants bring the material back to their settings and teach and model it in a sustained, systemic manner. Participants will be given training exercises, learning games, visual cues, quizzes, feedback forms, original orientation material and much more to enhance their role as trainers, models, and leaders.

Numerous schools and programs throughout North America have used Charlie's strength-based material to reshape their environments. Feedback indicates that in response to implementing this approach, physical restraints and serious behavioral issues decrease, staff turnover rates improve, grades ascend, and - most importantly - kids and staff members enjoy improved relationships and children emerge with real hope and skills for better days.

Who Should Attend: Anyone who trains, supervises, or leads professionals dealing with at-risk children, youth, and their families. The course is designed to enhance the strength-based skill-set and training acumen of school personnel (reg. and spec. ed), child and youth care providers, foster and residential care leadership, mentoring professionals, and juvenile justice staff.
